چکیده

A forced KdV equation including the special topography effect is derived to describe nonlinear long wave and solitary eddy based on quasi-geostrophic potential vorticity model. We obtain theoretical solution of concrete form stream function through perturbation theory multi-scale analysis methods. It found that joint weak shear basic flow can change cyclone anticyclone structure eddy, in meantime topographic affects East-West propagation direction wave. Finally, according interaction between by pseudo spectral numerical method, height related amplitude, wavelength velocity excited train, not only spatial wave, but also amplitude

Available potential vorticity and wave-averaged quasi-geostrophic flow

We derive a wave-averaged potential vorticity equation describing the evolution of strongly stratified, rapidly rotating quasi-geostrophic (QG) flow in a field of inertia-gravity internal waves. The derivation relies on a multiple-time-scale asymptotic expansion of the Eulerian Boussinesq equations. Our result confirms and extends the theory of Bühler & McIntyre (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 354, 1998,...

Precipitating Quasi-Geostrophic Equations and Potential Vorticity

Precipitating versions of the quasi-geostrophic (QG) equations are derived systematically, starting from the equations of a cloud-resolving model. The presence of phase changes of water from vapor to liquid and vice versa leads to important differences from the dry QG case. The precipitating QG (PQG) equations, in their simplest form, have two variables to describe the full system: a potential ...

Synchronization and chaos control in a periodically forced quasi-geostrophic two-layer model of baroclinic instability

Cyclic forcing on many timescales is believed to have a significant effect on various quasi-periodic, geophysical phenomena such as El Niño, the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, and glacial cycles. This variability has been investigated by numerous previous workers, in models ranging from simple energy balance constructions to full general circulation models. We present a numerical study in which pe...

Surface quasi-geostrophic dynamics

The dynamics of quasi-geostrophic flow with uniform potential vorticity reduces to the evolution of buoyancy, or potential temperature, on horizontal boundaries. There is a formal resemblance to two-dimensional flow, with surface temperature playing the role of vorticity, but a different relationship between the flow and the advected scalar creates several distinctive features. A series of exam...

A note on the derivation of the quasi-geostrophic potential vorticity equation

The derivation of the quasi-geostrophic potential vorticity equation of mathematical meteorology is usually done using fairly sophisticated techniques of perturbation theory, but stops short of deriving self-consistently the stratification parameter of the mean atmospheric state. In this note we suggest how this should be done within the confines of the theory, and as a consequence we raise the...
